How to Write Your First Song

Learn the simple steps to turn your ideas and feelings into your very own original song. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Pick a topic. Think about something you care about. It could be your favorite animal, a funny thing that happened at school, or even a feeling like being excited or tired. Write down three things you want to say about it.
  2. Find your rhythm. Say your three ideas out loud. Do you hear a beat? Try tapping your hand on your leg while you speak. Keep the rhythm steady and see if you can make your words fit into that beat.
  3. Add a melody. A melody is just the way your voice goes up and down. Try singing your sentences using a simple tune. If you have an instrument, try playing a few notes while you sing to see what sounds good to your ears.
  4. Put it all together. Combine your words, your rhythm, and your melody. Ask a grown-up to listen and tell you what they think. If you feel ready, use a recording device to save your song so you don't forget it.
