How to Learn to Play a Simple Rhythm

Learn the basics of rhythm by using your hands and simple household objects to create a steady beat. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Find your steady pulse. Start by tapping your hand on your leg to a slow, even count: 1, 2, 3, 4. Keep this speed consistent without speeding up or slowing down.
  2. Add the wooden spoons. Hold one spoon in each hand. Gently tap the spoons together on the counts of 1 and 3. Keep tapping your foot or nodding your head to keep the 1, 2, 3, 4 pulse going.
  3. Create a pattern. Now, try tapping the spoons on the bowl on counts 1 and 3, and clap your hands together on counts 2 and 4. This creates a simple rhythm pattern.
