How to Build a Backyard Fort
Learn how to construct your own outdoor hideaway using simple materials found around your home and yard. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.
- Find your perfect location. Look for a spot in your yard with a low-hanging tree branch or a fence corner. Ask a grown-up if the area is safe and clear of garden beds you shouldn't step on.
- Create the roof. Drape your largest sheet over the tree branch or tie it securely to a fence post. If you are using a branch, make sure it is strong enough to hold the weight of the fabric without snapping.
- Secure the corners. Pull the corners of the sheet tight and pin them to the ground using heavy rocks or bricks. If you have tent stakes, those work great too. Use clothespins to attach the sheet to low-hanging branches or fence wire to keep the roof from sagging.
- Furnish your space. Lay down a blanket to keep the ground clean, and add your favorite pillows. You now have a custom outdoor fort!
