How to Organize a Neighborhood Scavenger Hunt

A step-by-step guide for kids to plan and host a fun, safe scavenger hunt for friends in their neighborhood. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Map out your route. Grab a map of your neighborhood and pick 5 to 7 spots where you want to hide clues. Make sure all the spots are safe to reach and stay within your agreed-upon boundaries. Ask a grown-up to check your route to make sure it is safe.
  2. Write your clues. Write a riddle or a task for each location on a piece of paper. For example, 'Find the tree with the biggest leaves' or 'Look under the mailbox.' Make sure each clue leads to the next spot.
  3. Set up the hunt. Put each clue into an envelope. With your grown-up's help, go to each spot and hide the envelope or tape it where it can be easily found. Keep a master list of where you hid everything so you don't lose track!
  4. Start the game. Invite your friends, give them the first clue, and let the adventure begin. Stay nearby to watch them solve the riddles and cheer them on as they reach the final treasure.
