How to Start a Journal for Your Thoughts
Learn how to create a personal space to write down your ideas, feelings, and stories. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.
- Pick your home base. Find a notebook that feels right to you. It can be small enough to fit in your pocket or large enough to draw pictures in. If you don't have a notebook, you can staple several sheets of paper together.
- Make it yours. Decorate the cover so you know exactly which book is yours. You can write your name, draw a picture, or use stickers. This helps the journal feel like a special place that belongs only to you.
- Write your first entry. Start by writing the date at the top of the page. You can write about your day, a funny dream you had, or a list of things you want to do this weekend. There is no right or wrong way to write, so just let your thoughts flow.
- Find a quiet spot. Pick a cozy corner where you feel comfortable writing. Having a regular spot can help you get into the habit of checking in with your journal whenever you have something on your mind.
