How to Organize Your Craft Supplies

A simple step-by-step guide to help you sort, store, and find your art supplies so you can get back to creating. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Clear your space. Take everything out of your drawers, bins, or shelves and put it all in one big pile on the floor. Wipe down your empty storage areas so you are starting with a clean slate.
  2. Sort by category. Group your items into piles based on what they are. Put all your markers in one pile, paper in another, glue and tape in a third, and loose bits like beads or stickers in their own spots.
  3. Choose your containers. Find boxes or containers that fit your piles. Use smaller containers for tiny items like beads or buttons, and larger ones for paper or sketchbooks. If a container is too tall, ask a grown-up to help you cut it down to size.
  4. Label and store. Write what belongs in each container on a piece of tape or a label. Place your items inside, keeping the things you use most often in the easiest-to-reach spots.
