How to Use Kitchen Tools Safely
Learn the basics of handling kitchen tools like a pro so you can help prepare meals with confidence. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.
- Set up your workspace. Place your cutting board on a flat, stable surface. If it slides around, put a damp paper towel underneath it to keep it steady. Make sure you have plenty of room to move your arms comfortably.
- Practice the claw grip. When cutting soft items like a banana or cucumber, curl your fingers into a 'claw' shape and rest your fingertips on the food. Keep your thumb tucked behind your fingers so the knife blade rests against your knuckles, not your fingertips.
- Using a vegetable peeler. Hold the vegetable firmly in one hand. Hold the peeler in your other hand and pull it away from your body in a smooth, gentle motion. Always peel away from your fingers, never toward them.
- Cleaning up. Once you are finished, ask a grown-up to help you wash the tools with warm, soapy water. Dry them immediately with a towel and put them away in their designated drawer or block.
