How to Become a Kitchen Helper: Planning and Cooking Meals
Learn how to choose recipes, shop for ingredients, and help prepare delicious meals for your family. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.
- Pick your recipe. Look through a cookbook or a recipe website with a grown-up. Choose a recipe that sounds yummy and has steps you can help with, like mixing, washing vegetables, or measuring ingredients.
- Make a grocery list. Check the pantry and fridge to see what you already have. Write down the missing items on a notepad so you know exactly what to look for when you go to the store with your grown-up.
- Prep your station. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Clear off a clean space on the counter and gather all your tools and ingredients so everything is ready for you to start.
- Measure and mix. Follow the recipe instructions to measure your ingredients. Pour them into your bowl and stir them together carefully. If you are using a knife, remember to keep your fingers tucked away from the blade.
- Cook and serve. Ask a grown-up to handle the heat. While they manage the stove or oven, you can set the table and get the plates ready for everyone to eat.
