How to Write Your Own Short Story

A step-by-step guide to help you brainstorm, outline, and write an exciting original story from start to finish. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Brainstorm your main character. Think about who your story is about. Are they a space explorer, a talking animal, or someone just like you? Write down three things about them, like what they love to eat, what they are afraid of, and one special skill they have.
  2. Pick a problem. Every good story needs a challenge. What does your character want that they can't easily get? Maybe they lost a treasure map, or they need to win a race. Write down the one big goal your character is trying to reach.
  3. Map out the middle. Think of three things that happen to your character while they try to solve their problem. These should be little obstacles, like getting lost in a forest or meeting a tricky character who gives them a riddle.
  4. Write the ending. Decide how your character finally reaches their goal. Do they solve the problem by being brave, or do they learn something new? Write down the final scene where everything comes together.
  5. Put it all together. Now, write your story from start to finish using your notes. Don't worry about spelling or making it perfect on the first try—just focus on getting your ideas onto the paper.
