How to Build a Character for Your Story

Create a believable, exciting character for your creative writing projects by following these simple character-building steps.

  1. Give your character a name and a look. Start by picking a name that sounds right for your character. Then, draw or describe what they look like. Think about their hair, their favorite outfit, and one special item they always carry with them.
  2. Find their 'want' and their 'need'. A character usually wants something big, like winning a trophy or finding a hidden treasure. But they also have a 'need,' like learning to be brave or making a new friend. Write down one thing they want and one thing they need to learn.
  3. Pick a secret or a quirk. Give your character a personality trait that makes them stand out. Maybe they are afraid of the dark, or they have a habit of tapping their foot when they are nervous. This makes them feel more like a real person.
  4. Create a challenge. Think about one thing that stands in your character's way. If they want to win a race, maybe they have a sore ankle. If they want to explore a cave, maybe they are afraid of bats. This challenge helps start your story.
