How to Write Your Own Short Story
A step-by-step guide to help you create your own imaginative short story from scratch. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.
- Pick your main character. Think about who your story is about. Are they a brave explorer, a talking animal, or maybe a kid with a secret superpower? Write down their name and one thing they really want.
- Choose a setting. Decide where your story takes place. It could be in your own backyard, on a distant planet, or in a magical forest. Describe what it looks like in a few sentences.
- Create a problem. Every good story needs a challenge. What is standing in your character's way? Maybe they lost a key, or they are trying to learn a new skill. This is the 'what happens next' part of your story.
- Write the beginning, middle, and end. Start by introducing your character. In the middle, have them try to solve their problem. At the end, show how they succeeded or what they learned along the way.
- Read it out loud. Read your story aloud to yourself or ask a grown-up if they would like to hear it. This helps you hear if the sentences sound the way you want them to.
