How to Write a Poem About Your Day
Learn how to turn your daily adventures into a creative poem using simple observation techniques. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.
- Brainstorm your highlights. Think about your day from the moment you woke up until now. Jot down three specific things that happened: one thing you saw, one thing you heard, and one thing you felt.
- Choose your style. Decide if you want your poem to rhyme or not. A rhyming poem is fun, but a 'free verse' poem—where you just describe things clearly—is often easier for beginners.
- Write your lines. Take your list from Step 1 and turn each item into a line of poetry. Use descriptive words, like 'bright yellow sun' instead of just 'sun,' or 'crunchy leaves' instead of 'leaves.'
- Read it aloud. Read your poem out loud to hear how the words sound together. If a line feels clunky, try swapping out one or two words until it flows better.
