How to Draw Your Own Cartoon Characters
Learn how to build unique cartoon characters from simple shapes and expressive features. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.
- Start with basic shapes. Lightly sketch a circle for the head and a larger oval for the body. These don't have to be perfect; they are just the foundation for your character.
- Give your character personality. Decide if your character is happy, surprised, or grumpy. Draw two smaller circles for eyes and a curved line for the mouth. Big eyes usually make a character look friendly, while slanted eyebrows can make them look tough or silly.
- Add limbs and details. Draw simple stick-like arms and legs. You can add mittens for hands and big shoes for feet. Add extra details like messy hair, a hat, or a cape to show who your character is.
- Outline and color. Once you are happy with your pencil sketch, trace over your lines with a black marker. After the ink dries, use your eraser to remove the leftover pencil marks and color in your character.
