How to Test If Something Will Float
Discover the science of buoyancy by testing household items in water to see which ones sink and which ones float. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.
- Prepare your testing station. Place your bin or bowl on a flat table and fill it about three-quarters full with water. Lay your towel underneath the bin just in case things get a little splashy.
- Make your predictions. Before you drop anything in, look at your pile of objects. Write down in your notebook which ones you think will float and which ones you think will sink.
- Test your items. Pick up one item at a time. Hold it just above the surface of the water and let it go. Watch carefully to see if it stays on top or goes straight to the bottom.
- Record your results. Write down what actually happened for each item. Did any of your predictions surprise you? If an item sank, try to see if it stays on the bottom or if it floats back up.
