How to Make a Simple Compass

Learn how to build your own magnetic compass using a needle and a bowl of water to find your way. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Magnetize the needle. Hold the needle by the eye and rub the magnet along the needle in one direction only, about 30 times. This aligns the molecules in the steel to make it magnetic.
  2. Prepare your float. Ask a grown-up to help you cut a thin slice of cork or foam, or find a flat, dry leaf. This will act as a boat for your needle.
  3. Mount the needle. Carefully push the needle through the center of your float. Make sure it is balanced so it stays level.
  4. Set sail. Gently place the float in the center of your bowl of water. Watch as the needle slowly rotates until it settles, pointing towards the magnetic north.
