How to Build Your Own Backyard Bird Watching Station

Learn how to create a simple bird observation spot to attract local feathered friends and track your sightings. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

1. Find the perfect spot. Look for a quiet area in your yard that is close to trees or bushes where birds can hide. Make sure you can see this spot clearly from a window inside your house.
2. Set up the feeding and watering station. Place your bird feeder in a spot that is at least five feet off the ground to keep it safe from neighborhood cats. Place your shallow water dish on a flat surface nearby.
3. Create your observation post. Set up your chair or cushion at a distance where you can see the feeder without scaring the birds away. Keep your notebook and pencil ready to record your findings.
4. Start your bird log. Sit quietly and wait for the birds to arrive. When you see one, write down the date, the time, the colors you see, and what the bird is doing.
