How to Identify Common Garden Insects
Learn how to spot and name the tiny creatures living in your backyard with this simple guide. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.
- Pick your observation spot. Find a quiet patch of flowers, a vegetable garden, or even a tree. Sit very still and quiet for five minutes—insects are shy and will come out once they realize you aren't a threat.
- Look for clues. Use your magnifying glass to look at leaves and flower petals. Look for tiny holes in leaves, busy movement, or bright colors. Don't forget to check the undersides of leaves, as many insects hide there.
- Record your findings. When you see an insect, write down its size, color, how many legs it has, and what it is doing. If you have a camera, take a clear picture to help you identify it later.
- Identify the visitor. Compare your notes and photos to an insect field guide or ask a grown-up to help you use a nature identification app to find the insect's name.
