How to Build a Simple Kazoo

Create your own musical instrument using household items to make fun buzzing sounds. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Make the hole. Ask a grown-up to help you poke a hole in the side of your cardboard tube using the pencil. The hole should be about one inch from one of the ends.
  2. Attach the wax paper. Place your piece of wax paper over one end of the tube. Pull the edges down smoothly around the sides of the tube so it is tight like a drum head.
  3. Secure with a rubber band. Wrap the rubber band around the wax paper to hold it firmly in place against the tube. Make sure the wax paper stays tight and does not have any tears.
  4. Play your kazoo. Place your mouth over the open end of the tube and hum a song. Do not blow air like a whistle; instead, make a 'doo-doo-doo' sound with your voice to make the wax paper vibrate.
