How to Make Your Own Shaker Instruments

Create your own musical shakers using common household items and explore different sounds. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Prepare your container. If you are using a plastic bottle, make sure it is completely clean and dry inside. If you are using a cardboard tube, ask a grown-up to help you tape one end shut securely so nothing can leak out.
  2. Add your sound makers. Carefully pour a small handful of rice, beans, or popcorn into your container. Don't fill it more than one-quarter full, as you need empty space for the items to bounce around and make noise.
  3. Seal and test. Screw the lid on tightly or tape the open end of your tube shut. Shake it gently to hear the sound. If you want a louder sound, you might try adding a few more grains, but remember to keep the space for movement.
  4. Decorate your instrument. Use your markers, stickers, or construction paper to make your shaker look as cool as it sounds. Once you are finished, it is ready to play along with your favorite songs.
