How to Express Your Feelings Through Art

Learn how to use colors, shapes, and textures to show how you are feeling when words are hard to find. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Pick your colors. Think about the feeling you want to draw. If you feel calm, what colors come to mind? If you feel angry or energetic, what colors match that? Don't worry about drawing a 'real' picture; just pick colors that feel right to you.
  2. Start with shapes and lines. Use your markers or paint to draw lines on your paper. Jagged, sharp lines might feel like frustration, while soft, wavy lines might feel like peace. Make big, bold shapes or small, quiet dots—whatever matches what is happening inside you.
  3. Add texture with collage. Look through old magazines for pictures or patterns that match your mood. Carefully cut them out and glue them onto your paper to add more layers to your feeling.
  4. Give it a title. Once you are finished, look at your creation. You can write a title at the bottom or on the back if you want to, but it is okay if you just want to keep it as a secret feeling.
