How to Start a Band with Your Friends
A step-by-step guide for kids to form a musical group, choose instruments, and start practicing together. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.
- Find your bandmates. Talk to friends who are interested in playing music. You don't need to be experts; you just need people who are excited to learn and practice together.
- Choose your roles. Decide who will play which instrument. If you have two guitarists, that is great! If someone wants to sing or keep the beat with drums, make sure everyone has a role they enjoy.
- Pick a practice spot. Ask a grown-up to help you find a safe place where you can make noise without disturbing others. A garage, basement, or living room often works well.
- Start with a simple song. Pick a song everyone knows or create a simple rhythm together. Focus on playing in time with each other rather than playing perfectly.
- Set a schedule. Decide on a regular time to meet, like every Saturday afternoon. Consistency helps the band get better over time.
