How to Talk to Your Teacher About a Hard Assignment

Learn how to advocate for yourself and ask for the help you need when a school assignment feels overwhelming. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Check your work first. Look over the instructions one more time. Write down exactly which part is confusing you so you can explain it clearly to your teacher.
  2. Pick the right time. Ask your teacher if they have a moment to talk. You might say, 'Excuse me, I'm having trouble with this assignment. When is a good time to ask a few questions?'
  3. Be specific. When you meet, share your list. Instead of saying 'I don't get it,' try saying, 'I understand the first part, but I'm stuck on how to solve this equation.' This helps the teacher know exactly how to guide you.
  4. Listen and take notes. Listen closely to their explanation. Write down the tips they give you so you don't forget them later when you are working on your own.
