How to Set Goals You Can Actually Reach

Learn how to break big dreams into small, doable steps so you can achieve whatever you set your mind to. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Pick one thing. Choose one goal you really care about, like learning to draw a specific animal or finishing a book series. Focus on just one thing at a time so you don't feel overwhelmed.
  2. Break it into tiny pieces. If your goal is to learn a new skill, what is the very first thing you need to know? Write down three small steps you can do this week. For example, if you want to learn to bake, step one is finding a simple recipe with a grown-up.
  3. Make it measurable. A goal is easier to hit when you know what 'done' looks like. Instead of saying 'I want to practice more,' say 'I will practice for 10 minutes, three times this week.'
  4. Check your progress. Pick a day, like Sunday, to look at your list. Ask yourself: 'Did I do my steps this week?' If you did, celebrate! If you didn't, don't worry—just adjust your plan for next week.
