How to Identify Local Trees

Learn how to become a junior dendrologist by identifying the trees in your neighborhood using leaf shapes and bark patterns.

  1. Observe the leaf shape. Look for a fallen leaf on the ground. Is it shaped like a star, a hand, or a needle? Draw the shape in your notebook. If you find a needle-like leaf, you might be looking at a conifer, like a pine tree.
  2. Examine the bark. Walk up to the tree trunk and look at the bark. Is it smooth, papery, or rough and chunky? Use your magnifying glass to see the tiny details. Ask a grown-up to help you touch the bark safely to feel its texture.
  3. Check for seeds or fruit. Look around the base of the tree. Do you see acorns, pinecones, or berries? These are big clues that help you identify the species. Sketch what you find next to your leaf drawing.
  4. Match your findings. Use your field guide or ask a grown-up to help you use a nature app to compare your sketches and notes to known tree types. See if you can find the name of your tree!
