How to Plan Your Own Nature Exploration Adventure

Learn how to scout, prepare, and lead your own safe nature exploration trip while building confidence outdoors. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Choose your territory. Pick a location you know well, like a backyard, a local park, or a familiar hiking trail. Ask a grown-up to look at the map with you to confirm the boundaries of where you are allowed to go.
  2. Set a goal for your mission. Decide what you want to find. Are you looking for specific types of leaves, animal tracks, or interesting rock formations? Write your goal in your notebook so you stay focused.
  3. Pack your gear. Pack your bag with your essentials. Check that your water bottle is full and that you have your whistle and notebook. Ask a grown-up to check your pack to make sure you haven't forgotten anything important.
  4. Execute your exploration. Head out on your route. Practice 'leaving no trace' by staying on paths and respecting the plants and animals you encounter. Take notes or sketches of what you find.
