How to Pack Your Backpack for a Hike
Learn how to organize your gear so you can hike comfortably and stay prepared for your next outdoor adventure. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.
- Start with the heavy items. Place your heaviest items, like your full water bottle, in the middle of the bag close to where your back will be. This helps keep your balance steady while you walk.
- Add your layers and gear. Pack your extra jacket or fleece around the heavy items. Use the side pockets or the front compartment for smaller things like your notebook, pencil, and map so you can reach them quickly.
- Stash your snacks at the top. Put your snacks near the top or in an easy-access pocket. This way, you don't have to dig through your whole bag when you need a quick energy boost on the trail.
- Check the weight and fit. Put the pack on and tighten the shoulder straps so it sits comfortably against your back. If the bag feels wobbly or pulls you backward, ask a grown-up to help you adjust the straps or rearrange the items inside.
