How to Set Up Classic Outdoor Games for Kids

Learn how to organize and set up timeless outdoor games like tag, hide-and-seek, and relay races in your own backyard.

  1. Define your play area. Use your sidewalk chalk to draw clear lines on the pavement or place rocks to mark the corners of your playing field. Ask a grown-up to help you make sure you are staying in a safe area away from the street.
  2. Choose your game. Decide if you want to play a game of tag, a relay race, or hide-and-seek. For relay races, set up a 'start' line and a 'turn-around' point using your cones or rocks.
  3. Set the rules. Before you begin, make sure everyone understands the rules. For example, agree on where the 'safe zone' is and how long someone needs to count during hide-and-seek.
  4. Start the fun. Once everyone is ready, have one person signal the start. If you are using a whistle, ask a grown-up to show you how to blow it safely before you start the game.
