How to Make Your Own Shaker Instrument

Learn how to build a simple, rhythmic shaker instrument using common household items and your own creativity. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

1. Prepare your bottle. Make sure your plastic bottle is completely clean and dry inside. If there is any moisture, your rice or beans might get stuck.
2. Add the sound. Place your funnel into the opening of the bottle. Carefully pour your dried beans or rice through the funnel until the bottle is about one-quarter full.
3. Seal the top. Screw the cap on tightly. Ask a grown-up to help you wrap a piece of strong tape around the cap and the neck of the bottle so it stays secure.
4. Decorate your instrument. Now it is time to make it look cool! Use stickers, markers, or colorful tape to decorate the outside of your shaker.
