How to Listen to Music Like a Pro
Learn how to turn on your ears and discover the hidden layers in your favorite songs through active listening. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.
- Find a quiet space. Choose a room where you won't be interrupted. Sit in a comfortable chair or on the floor. Close your eyes so you can focus entirely on what you hear.
- Listen for the rhythm. Press play on your song. Instead of singing along, focus only on the drums or the beat. Ask yourself: Is the beat fast or slow? Does it stay the same, or does it change?
- Hunt for hidden instruments. Listen to the song a second time. This time, try to pick out one instrument, like a guitar, a piano, or a horn. Write down what you think that instrument is doing. Ask a grown-up if you are unsure which instrument is which.
- Notice the singer's feelings. On the third listen, pay attention to the voice. Does the singer sound happy, sad, or excited? Does their voice get louder or softer when they reach the chorus?
