How to Start Learning an Instrument

A beginner-friendly guide to picking up a new musical instrument and building a practice habit that sticks. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Choose your sound. Listen to different types of music and notice which instruments grab your attention. Ask a grown-up to help you research local music shops or school programs where you might be able to rent or try out an instrument before committing to one.
  2. Set up your space. Find a quiet corner where you can practice without being interrupted. Set up your music stand at eye level so you do not have to slouch while you play.
  3. Learn the basics of care. Every instrument needs special care, like cleaning strings or keeping wood away from heat. Ask a teacher or a grown-up to show you exactly how to hold, clean, and put your instrument away safely.
  4. Start with small goals. Instead of trying to learn a whole song at once, focus on just one scale or one set of notes. Practice for 10 to 15 minutes a day rather than one long hour once a week.
