How to Keep a Journal
A simple guide for kids to start their own journal to capture thoughts, memories, and ideas. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.
- Pick your space. Find a quiet spot where you feel comfortable. It could be your desk, a cozy corner on your bed, or even a spot outside under a tree. Make sure you have enough light to see what you are writing.
- Write the date. At the top of a fresh page, write today's date. This helps you look back later and remember exactly when you had a certain thought or did something fun.
- Start with a prompt. If you don't know what to write, try answering a question. You could write about the best part of your day, something that made you laugh, or a goal you have for the week. Just start with one sentence.
- Make it your own. Your journal doesn't have to be just words. You can draw doodles in the margins, tape in a cool leaf you found, or write a poem. There are no rules about what goes on the page.
