How to Be a Great Listener
Learn the simple steps to show your friends and family that you are truly hearing what they have to say. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.
- Stop what you are doing. When someone starts talking to you, pause your game, put down your book, or look away from your screen. Turning your body toward the person shows them that they have your full attention.
- Use your eyes to listen. Try to look at the person while they speak. This is called 'eye contact.' If looking directly at their eyes feels tricky, you can look at their nose or mouth instead. This lets them know you are focused on them.
- Keep your mouth quiet. Wait until the other person is completely finished speaking before you start your turn. Resist the urge to interrupt, even if you have a really exciting story to share. Let them finish their whole thought first.
- Ask a follow-up question. Once they are done, show you were paying attention by asking a question about what they just said. For example, you could ask, 'How did that make you feel?' or 'What happened next?'
