How to Build a Habit of Daily Practice

Learn how to turn any skill or activity into a consistent daily habit using a simple tracking method. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Pick one specific thing. Choose one skill you want to practice. Instead of saying 'I want to practice music,' say 'I will play the piano for 15 minutes.' Keeping it small makes it easier to do every day.
  2. Find your 'anchor'. Pick a time of day that already has a routine, like right after you finish your homework or right after you brush your teeth. Doing your practice at the same time every day helps your brain remember to do it.
  3. Set your timer. Set a timer for your chosen amount of time. Tell yourself that once the timer starts, you are only focused on your practice until it dings. Ask a grown-up if you need help setting a timer.
  4. Track your progress. After you finish, put a big 'X' or a sticker on your calendar for that day. Seeing your streak of marks grow is a great way to stay motivated.
