How to Plan Your Perfect After-School Schedule

Learn how to organize your afternoon so you have time for homework, play, and everything in between. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. List your must-dos. Write down everything you have to do today, like homework, chores, or sports practice. Be honest about how long each task usually takes you.
  2. Identify your 'must-finish' time. Ask a grown-up what time you need to be finished with everything, including your bedtime routine. This is your 'stop' time.
  3. Build your schedule blocks. Draw a timeline on your paper. Place your fixed activities, like soccer practice or dinner, first. Then, slot in your homework and chores during your most energetic times.
  4. Add your recharge time. Don't forget to schedule breaks! Add 15-minute slots for a snack, playing outside, or just relaxing. You need this time to keep your brain happy.
