How to Pack Your Own Healthy Lunch

A step-by-step guide for kids to learn how to pack a balanced, delicious lunch for school. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Choose your containers. Find a clean lunch bag and the containers you will use. Make sure your lids fit tightly so nothing spills while your bag is in your locker or backpack.
  2. Pack the main dish. Place your main item, like a sandwich or pasta, into the largest container. If it is something that could get soggy, keep it in a separate baggie or container until lunchtime.
  3. Add your fruits and veggies. Wash your fruits and vegetables before packing them. If you are using carrot sticks or cucumber slices, place them in a small container so they stay crunchy.
  4. Include a protein or extra snack. Add your protein source, such as yogurt or cheese. If you are packing something that needs to stay cold, place your ice pack next to these items.
  5. Check and zip. Double-check that all your containers are closed properly. Add your water bottle and zip your lunch bag shut.
