How to Keep Your Kitchen Space Tidy

A simple, step-by-step guide for kids to help keep the kitchen clean and organized while they work or play. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Clear the decks. Before you start a project, make sure your workspace is empty. Move plates, bowls, or ingredients you aren't using to the sink or back to their storage spots.
  2. Clean as you go. If you spill something while working, wipe it up right away with your damp cloth. This keeps crumbs and sticky spots from spreading.
  3. Sort your items. Put trash in the bin and recyclables in the recycling container. If you have dirty dishes, place them directly into the sink or the dishwasher if a grown-up says you can.
  4. Wipe the surface. Once your workspace is clear, use your damp cloth to wipe the counter from one side to the other. Follow up with a dry towel to remove any extra water.
