How to Pack a Backpack for a Hike
Learn how to pack your own bag for a day of exploring so you have everything you need for a fun and safe hike. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.
- Start with the heavy stuff. Place your water bottle and heavier items in the middle of your backpack, close to your back. This helps keep your balance steady while you walk.
- Pack your snacks and layers. Put your snacks and extra jacket in the main compartment. Keep your snacks near the top or in an easy-to-reach side pocket so you can grab them quickly when you need a boost.
- Add your safety extras. Slide your hat, sunglasses, and trash bag into a smaller pocket. Make sure your map is tucked somewhere safe where it won't get bent or wet.
- Check the straps. Put on your backpack and tighten the shoulder straps until the bag feels snug against your back. Ask a grown-up to help you adjust them so the bag doesn't bounce around when you move.
