How to Build a Daily Routine That Actually Works
Learn how to organize your day to get things done while still having time for what you love. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.
- List your non-negotiables. Write down everything that must happen every day, like waking up, going to school, eating meals, and your bedtime. These are your 'anchor' events that stay in the same place every day.
- Identify your flexible tasks. List the things you want to accomplish, like homework, chores, reading, or playing outside. Write these on sticky notes so you can move them around on your board until you find a rhythm that feels right.
- Group similar tasks together. Try 'batching' your work. If you have two chores, do them one after the other. If you have homework, try to do it all in one block before you move on to your free time.
- Add buffer time. Things often take longer than we expect. Add 10 to 15 minutes of 'buffer time' between tasks so you don't feel rushed if something takes a little extra effort.
- Check in with a grown-up. Show your plan to a parent or guardian. Ask them if the schedule looks realistic and if you've remembered all your responsibilities.
