How to Do More Things On Your Own
A kid-friendly guide to building independence by mastering small daily tasks with confidence and help from your grown-ups.
- Pick one small task to master. Choose one thing you want to do on your own, like making your bed, putting your dirty clothes in the hamper, or setting the table. Focus on just this one task until you feel like an expert.
- Ask a grown-up for a demo. Watch a grown-up do the task slowly. Pay attention to the order they do things. Ask them, 'What is the most important part of this job?' so you know what to focus on.
- Practice with a partner. Try the task while the grown-up watches. If you get stuck, don't worry! Ask them to show you that specific part again. Keep practicing until you can do it without looking for help.
- Create your own checklist. Write down the steps of your task on a piece of paper. Hang it somewhere you can see it. Checking off your progress helps you remember what to do next.
