How to Pack Your Own Healthy School Lunch

Learn how to build a balanced, tasty school lunch that keeps you energized for the rest of your school day. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Choose your main item. Pick a protein or grain-based main, such as a turkey wrap or a bean salad. Use your clean cutting board to slice sandwiches in half so they fit easily into your container.
  2. Add your crunchy sides. Select a fruit and a vegetable to add color and crunch. Wash them thoroughly under cool, running water. If you are cutting larger vegetables, ask a grown-up to help with the knife work.
  3. Pack a protein boost. Include a small portion of protein to keep your energy steady. This could be a cheese stick, a small container of hummus, or some yogurt. Place these in a sealed container to prevent leaks.
  4. Assemble and chill. Place your containers into your lunch bag. Slide the ice pack in last, right next to your perishable items like cheese or meat, to keep them cool until lunch time.
