How to Make Homemade Pizza Dough with Your Family
Learn to make simple, delicious pizza dough from scratch with easy steps the whole family can enjoy together.
- Gather Your Ingredients. You'll need 3 cups all-purpose flour, 1 packet (2¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon sugar, 1 cup warm water (around 110°F), and 2 tablespoons olive oil. Make sure your water isn't too hot or it will kill the yeast. It should feel comfortably warm on your wrist, like bath water for a baby.
- Activate the Yeast. In a small bowl, mix the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes foamy and bubbly. This tells you the yeast is alive and working. If it doesn't foam, your yeast might be old or your water too hot or cold. Start over with fresh yeast and properly warmed water.
- Mix the Dough. In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir with a wooden spoon until it forms a shaggy dough. Don't worry if it looks messy at first – that's normal.
- Knead the Dough. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for 8-10 minutes by pushing it away from you with the heel of your hand, folding it back over, and turning it a quarter turn. The dough should become smooth and elastic. Kids can help with this step – it's like playing with edible playdough.
- Let It Rise. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning it to coat all sides. Cover with a damp towel or plastic wrap. Let it rise in a warm spot for 1-2 hours until it doubles in size. A slightly warm oven (turned off) or sunny windowsill works well.
- Shape and Use. Once risen, punch down the dough gently to release air bubbles. Divide into 2 portions for thin crust pizzas or keep whole for one thick crust. Roll or stretch into your desired shape. The dough is now ready for toppings and baking.
