How to Make Homemade Pizza Dough with Kids
Learn to make simple homemade pizza dough from scratch with step-by-step instructions perfect for cooking with children.
- Gather Your Ingredients. You'll need 3 cups all-purpose flour, 1 packet (2¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 tablespoon sugar, 1 cup warm water (about as warm as a comfortable bath), and 2 tablespoons olive oil. Make sure your water isn't too hot or it will kill the yeast – it should feel pleasantly warm on your wrist. Have your kids help measure ingredients into separate bowls so everything is ready to go.
- Activate the Yeast. In a small bowl, mix the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes foamy and bubbly. This is called 'proofing' and shows that your yeast is alive and working. Kids love watching this science experiment happen! If the mixture doesn't foam, your yeast might be expired or the water was too hot – start over with fresh yeast and cooler water.
- Mix the Dough. In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the foamy yeast mixture and olive oil. Using a wooden spoon or clean hands, mix everything together until a shaggy dough forms. It will look messy at first – this is normal! Keep mixing until most of the flour is incorporated and you have a rough ball of dough.
- Knead the Dough. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead by pushing the dough away from you with the heel of your hand, folding it back over itself, turning it a quarter turn, and repeating. Do this for 8-10 minutes until the dough becomes smooth and elastic. Little hands can take turns – just supervise to make sure they're being gentle but firm. The dough is ready when you can stretch a small piece thin enough to see light through it without tearing.
- Let the Dough Rise. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning it to coat all sides with oil. Cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap. Let it rise in a warm spot for 1-2 hours until it doubles in size. A sunny windowsill or the top of your refrigerator works well. Kids can check on it periodically and be amazed as it grows! On cooler days, you can place the bowl on top of your dryer while it's running for gentle warmth.
- Shape and Use Your Dough. Once risen, punch down the dough gently to release air bubbles. You can use it right away or divide it into portions for multiple pizzas. To shape, roll with a rolling pin or stretch by hand on a floured surface. If making pizza immediately, preheat your oven to 475°F and add your favorite toppings. If saving for later, wrap tightly and refrigerate for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
