How to Use Basic Hand Tools Safely

Learn the fundamentals of using a hammer, screwdriver, and tape measure with confidence and care. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

1. Measure twice, cut once. Pull the end of your tape measure and hold it steady against the edge of your wood. Use a pencil to mark your spot. Ask a grown-up to show you how to lock the tape in place so it doesn't snap back on your fingers.
2. Hammering with control. Hold the hammer near the end of the handle for the best leverage. Place the nail where you marked your spot, hold it steady with your fingers, and give it a few light taps to get it started. Once the nail stands on its own, move your fingers away and use firmer swings, keeping your eye on the nail head.
3. Driving a screw. Match the tip of your screwdriver to the shape of the screw head. Place the tip firmly into the groove, apply steady pressure downward, and turn your wrist clockwise to tighten. If it feels too hard to turn, ask a grown-up to help you start a small pilot hole.
