How to Build a Simple Wooden Boat
Learn how to construct a sturdy, floating wooden boat using basic materials and a bit of creativity. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.
- Shape the hull. Take your wooden block and use the saw to cut the front into a point, like a triangle. This helps your boat cut through the water. Ask a grown-up to help you secure the block while you cut.
- Smooth the edges. Use your sandpaper to rub down the rough edges of your wood block. Sanding makes the wood smooth so it looks like a real boat and doesn't give you any splinters.
- Drill the mast hole. Ask a grown-up to help you drill a small hole in the center of the top of your boat. The hole should be just wide enough for your wooden dowel to fit snugly.
- Assemble the sail. Cut two small slits in your fabric sail—one at the top and one at the bottom. Slide the dowel through these slits, then put a small drop of glue into the hole on the boat hull and push the dowel in.
