How to Build a Simple Wooden Boat

Learn how to construct a sturdy, floating wooden boat using basic materials and a bit of creativity. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Shape the hull. Take your wooden block and use the saw to cut the front into a point, like a triangle. This helps your boat cut through the water. Ask a grown-up to help you secure the block while you cut.
  2. Smooth the edges. Use your sandpaper to rub down the rough edges of your wood block. Sanding makes the wood smooth so it looks like a real boat and doesn't give you any splinters.
  3. Drill the mast hole. Ask a grown-up to help you drill a small hole in the center of the top of your boat. The hole should be just wide enough for your wooden dowel to fit snugly.
  4. Assemble the sail. Cut two small slits in your fabric sail—one at the top and one at the bottom. Slide the dowel through these slits, then put a small drop of glue into the hole on the boat hull and push the dowel in.
