How to Build a Simple Pulley System

Learn how to move heavy objects with ease by building your own simple pulley system using household items. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Prepare your bucket. Use your scissors to carefully poke two small holes on opposite sides of the top rim of your bucket or cup. Cut a piece of string about 12 inches long, thread it through the holes, and tie the ends together to create a handle.
  2. Create the pulley wheel. Slide the coat hanger through the center of your spool. If you are using a hook, make sure the spool spins freely on it. This spool will act as your pulley wheel.
  3. Set up the anchor. Ask a grown-up to help you hang your spool from a sturdy spot, like a door handle or a secure hook on a shelf. Make sure it is high enough that your bucket can hang freely without hitting the floor.
  4. Attach the lifting rope. Tie one end of a long piece of string to the handle of your bucket. Drape the other end of the string over the spool. Now, pull down on the free end of the string to watch your bucket rise.
