How to Listen to Music Like a Pro

Learn how to actively listen to your favorite songs by breaking them down into instruments, rhythms, and moods. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Find a quiet space. Choose a spot where you won't be interrupted for at least 10 minutes. Turn off other devices so you can focus entirely on the music.
  2. Listen for the rhythm. Play your song and try to tap your foot or clap along to the beat. Ask yourself: Is it fast or slow? Does it stay the same the whole time or does it change?
  3. Pick one instrument. Listen to the song again, but this time, try to ignore the singer. Focus only on one instrument, like the drums, the guitar, or the bass. See if you can follow that one sound from the beginning to the end.
  4. Identify the mood. Think about how the song makes you feel. Does it sound happy, sad, energetic, or mysterious? Write down three words that describe the mood in your notebook.
