How to Weave a Simple Bookmark
Create a colorful, custom bookmark using a cardboard loom and your favorite yarn. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.
- Prepare your loom. Ask a grown-up to help you cut a piece of cardboard into a 2x7 inch rectangle. Cut small notches about 1/4 inch deep along the top and bottom short edges, spaced about 1/4 inch apart.
- String the warp. Tape one end of your yarn to the back of the cardboard. Bring the yarn up through the first notch, down the front, and through the notch on the opposite side. Continue this back-and-forth pattern until all notches are filled, then tape the end to the back.
- Weave the yarn. Thread your tapestry needle with a new piece of yarn. Start at the bottom, weaving the needle over one string and under the next. When you reach the end, turn around and weave back the other way, alternating your pattern.
- Finish your bookmark. Keep weaving until you reach the top. Carefully slide the loops off the cardboard notches. Tie the loose ends together in a simple knot to secure your work.
