How to Make Your Own Abstract Canvas Art
Create a professional-looking piece of abstract wall art using painter's tape and acrylic paints. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.
- Tape your design. Lay your canvas flat on a protected surface. Tear off strips of painter's tape and press them onto the canvas in any pattern you like—try crisscrossing them to make triangles or diamonds. Make sure to press the edges of the tape down firmly so paint doesn't sneak underneath.
- Paint your sections. Pick your colors and start painting in the shapes created by the tape. You can paint each section a different color or use shades of the same color for a cool effect. It is okay if you paint over the edges of the tape!
- Let it dry. Wait for the paint to be completely dry to the touch, which usually takes about an hour. If you peel the tape too early, the wet paint might smudge.
- Reveal your masterpiece. Gently pull the tape off at an angle. As you remove each piece, you will see the crisp white lines underneath. If any paint bled under the tape, you can use a tiny brush to touch it up with white paint once everything is dry.
