How to Make Your Own Finger Paint

Create vibrant, non-toxic finger paint at home using simple kitchen ingredients for your next art project. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Mix your base. In your saucepan, stir together the cornstarch, sugar, salt, and cold water until the powder is fully dissolved and there are no lumps.
  2. Cook the mixture. Ask a grown-up to place the pan on the stove over medium heat. Stir constantly until the mixture thickens into a smooth, gel-like consistency. This usually takes about 5 minutes.
  3. Cool and divide. Once it is thick, take it off the heat and let it cool down completely. Once it is safe to touch, pour equal amounts into your small bowls or jars.
  4. Add your colors. Add 2-3 drops of food coloring to each bowl. Stir well until the color is bright and even. You can mix colors to create new ones, like red and blue to make purple!
