Learn how to build a working pulley system using household items to lift lightweight objects with ease. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.
- Prepare your bucket. Use your scissors to poke two small holes near the top rim of your cup or bucket, directly across from each other. Ask a grown-up to help you with the poking. Cut a piece of string about 10 inches long, thread it through the holes, and tie the ends together to create a handle.
- Set up the pulley wheel. Slide your empty thread spool or plastic cap onto the horizontal bar of a sturdy hanger. Make sure it spins freely when you touch it. Hang the hanger on a doorknob or a towel bar.
- Attach the lifting line. Tie one end of your long string to the handle of your bucket. Drape the other end of the string over the spool on your hanger. Now, hold the loose end of the string and pull down to see your bucket rise.
